october eight
It’s October eighth and it feels like fall today.
Usually, I would be mourning the passing of summer, but today I’m way too busy being ecstatic about pumpkin season starting. Something happens to me every year around this time, I see one pumpkin and suddenly I lose all sense of proportion.
The pumpkins have actually been in grocery stores for weeks now. I’ve seen them, and I’ve acknowledged them. But I refuse to let pumpkin season begin for me until the weather gets involved.
And today, the weather got involved. I opened my curtains this morning to cold, pouring rain and suddenly it was official: Fall had arrived, pumpkin season had begun. The time had come. Some may say pumpkin season is coming to an end, but not for me. Absolutely fucking not for me. If anything, I’m just getting started. And I’m so fucking excited.
Every year, I don’t know how else to explain it, I become obsessed. Completely and utterly obsessed. I start buying pumpkin-flavored things I don’t need, planning meals around pumpkins and genuinely wondering how I ever lived without them.
It’s like I’m possessed by some kind of pumpkin demon. And honestly? I’m happy to let it take over.
I’m such a sucker for everything pumpkin, the other day I bought pumpkin spice syrup (which I love), they really get me every time. Put a pumpkin on some kind of packaging and I’m basically fucked.
I’m about to go to the grocery store to get my first pumpkin, and tonight I’ll make pumpkin soup. Fuck yeah, I can’t wait.
Just thinking about pumpkin makes me happy. I think it’s such a gift that I can’t be sad about summer being over because there are pumpkins everywhere. This means the grief of another passed summer will simply hit me a few weeks later.
I just made Pumpkin Spiced Matcha at home with the syrup I bought the other day. So fucking good.
PUMPKIN BUCKET LIST
everything I wanna make
Pumpkin soup — the uncontested queen of pumpkin dishes. I want to make so much pumpkin soup that I drown in it, I want it thick, aggressively orange and served with way too much bread.
Pumpkin cake — I hate baking, but last year I made my first pumpkin cake and it turned out ridiculously good, so unfortunately I now have to do it again.
Pumpkin gnocchi — I have never made pumpkin gnocchi before, but I feel like this is the year I become the kind of person who casually makes pumpkin gnocchi at home.
Pumpkin pancakes — because apparently pumpkin needs to be incorporated into every meal of the day, I want these on a slow Sunday morning with ginger lemon tea and absolutely no plans for the rest of the day.
Pumpkin Spice Matcha — had my first one today and I refuse to drink my matcha without it from now on. I fear I may have permanently ruined regular matcha for myself.
As of now, I think that’s about it.
It’s funny because whenever I buy the first pumpkin of the year, I suddenly can’t imagine life without pumpkins. Then I eat so much fucking pumpkin that, eventually, I can let them go quite easily, just to fall into another season of pumpkin obsession the following year.
But for now, I don’t want to imagine my life without pumpkins ever again. I love them. They are so pretty. I’m happy.
We are so fucking back.
